Acid stain mix

by Kris Koffing
(NC)

Q. How do you mix your own acid stain? What chemicals do you use and what ratios?

A. I don't know the answer to this question because we don't make our own stains. It's too much of a hassle to mess with all the ingredients and find a place for them to sit and collect dust until we need them again. A gallon of stain doesn't cost very much ($40-$60) and you can make it go a long way by diluting it with water. We dilute all our stains with at least 50% water. Besides, I have more faith in the reputable companies that make it than I would if I made it myself. Sorry I can't answer your question but it just seems to inconvenient and time consuming to make the stuff compared to what you can buy it for.
