When can I stain or paint new concrete?

New concrete should not be stained or painted until the curing process is nearly complete. In warm weather wait 15-20 days before staining or painting. In cooler weather (below 65 degrees) you should wait 30-45 days. This ensures that the surface has cured to full strength before attacking it with cleaners and stains.

Also, curing agents must be stripped so that stains can penetrate and epoxy paints will adhere. This can be done by grinding or sanding. You can also try stripping agents but this can be a very vigorous task especially for textured surfaces. If you plan to stain or paint your concrete, disuss alternative curing methods with the contractor.
