Application of Concrete Overlay

The first step in application of concrete overlay is to read and understand the instructions on the product packages. Instructions and mixing ratios vary somewhat between manufacturers.

For this project, we used a technique called "slop down, knock down". This is a fairly easy technique that can help hide many imperfections in the concrete surface.

Tools needed:

Use painters tape to tape off and protect any edges or walls from the overlay material and stain.

Using a heavy duty drill and mixing paddle, mix one bag of overlay material with water in a 5 gallon bucket according to package instructions.

Fill a plastic pump sprayer with water and wet the surface, trying not to puddle it. Wetting the surface helps draw the polymers into the pores of the concrete.

overlay application

Pour a small amount of overlay material onto the surface. Spread it evenly with a squeegee and avoid leaving squeegee marks. Do small areas at a time because the pre-wetting will dry quickly.

overlay application

For vertical surfaces, let the overlay material run over and drip down, then drag the squeegee across the surface to cover it evenly.

Allow the first application to dry completely. Then scrape off any boogers and use a grinding stone to smooth out any bumps or squeegee marks.
