Q. Which concrete would be best to protect against freeze and thaw damage.
A. You should be using concrete with at least 4000 psi strength. If you are, then the type of concrete used isn't nearly as important as placement, finishing, and curing when it comes to freeze and thaw damage. Freeze and thaw cycles attack concrete at the surface, so the strength of the surface is critical. Placing the concrete at proper slump(wetness), using proper finishing techniques, and curing the surface, are the best safeguards against freeze and thaw damage. Also, keeping the concrete sealed will help keep water from seeping into the pores.
