Can you place v cuts in dried concrete slabs?

by Sophie
(Las Vegas, nv USA)

Q. We recently poured a patio slab and the guys finishing it failed to place the relief cuts before it was set. Can the v cuts still be placed in the slab after it is dried?

A. You can place control cuts anytime after conrete is poured, although the sooner the better. They don't have to be v cuts. Most concrete slabs are cut with regular sawcuts. You just need a cut-off saw with a diamond blade. The depth should be about 1/4 of the concrete depth. Don't space them anymore than 10 feet apart.
