Can You Stain An Existing Concrete Surface?

Can you stain an existing concrete surface. The answer is yes. Staining can revitalize old concrete to give it a refreshing new look. It won't, however, mask any defects on the surface that most old concrete has. Depending on how old the concrete is, water based (acrylic) stains may work better than acid stains.

Acid stains create color by chemically reacting with the cementitious material on the surface. So as long as cement is present, a reaction will occur. Acid stains will create a veriegated or mottled appearance that looks natural and unique, as no two acid stained slabs can look exactly the same. If you want a more consistant or uniform appearance, acrylic concrete stains are the way to go. Acrylic stains act like a dye by penetrating the surface and bonding with the concrete.
