Carpet on front porch

by Sharon
(Dalhart, Texas)

Q. I am hoping you can help us. We are trying to remove
this turf off our front porch and every time we take some of the carpet up some of the concrete is peeling up also. What do we do with this mess? Thank you. Frustrated in Texas

A. If the surface of the concrete is coming off with the carpet, then the surface is no good anyways so you may as well remove whatever comes off. Of course it will need to be resurfaced once all the weakened concrete is removed. Unfortunately, I don't know of any easy method to remove it. You can't grind or shotblast carpet. You'll just have to slowly chip away at it. As a contractor, I would beat the entire porch out and replace it but I understand that may not be feasible for you. If you can afford it, you should hire someone to replace it. That's the only lasting solution. Resurfacing may work depending on how structurally sound the concrete is. You may be able to get away with it in Texas if there are no freeze and thaw cycles throughout the year.
