Cold Weather Concrete Sealer

Cold weather concrete sealer is actually a misnomer. In other words, there is no specially designed sealer to guard against cold weather. There are two purposes for concrete sealers.

Protection

Sealers form a membrane on the surface to prevent penetration of moisture or any foreign substances. They will not keep cold out. Cold temperatures is not what damages concrete. It’s moisture in the concrete that’s exposed to freeze and thaw cycles. Obviously as water freezes it expands. The expansion of freezing water will break the tensil strength of concrete causing scaling and spalling. Anything that will stop the penetration of moisture will protect the concrete in cold weather.

Curing

As for curing concrete, there is also no sealer designed specially for cold weather. Sealer is applied to reduce moisture evaporation. The longer it takes concrete to dry, the stronger it gets. Sealer will not keep it from freezing. Other methods must be used such as covering with insulation blankets and straw or using a freeze resistant concrete mix.

There is no such thing as cold weather concrete sealer.
