A concrete countertop mix should be designed to minimize shrinkage and porosity while maintaining good compressive strength and workability. We don't use the same mix that's used for driveways, sidewalks, or floors. Different mixes are required for different applications and conditions that the concrete faces.
Concrete shrinks as it cures which results in "shrinkage cracks". But this cracking can be controlled and minimized with special additives and adjusting the water:cement ratios. Additives also increase the workability of the concrete making it easier to pour, strike off, and achieve a nice, smooth finish.
Some contractors design their own mixes but most prefer to skip that step and use a predesigned countertop mix.
For do-it-yourselfers, save yourself the headaches, make your project as easy as possible, and use the special concrete countertop mix. The instructions for adding water and mixing are right on the package.
