Concrete Countertop Becoming Favorite Choice for Customers and Homeowners

concrete countertop

A concrete countertop offers a unique and highly customizable option for many homeowners. It is just as durable and usable as any other solid surface countertop on the market. After years of use, it will slowly and naturally acquire a warmth and patina that enriches any kitchen, bathroom, outdoor patio, etc. Due to the flexibility and ability to mimic many other materials, concrete is quickly becoming a favorite choice for customers and homeowners.

Concrete countertops add personality to any room or area. The extreme versatility of concrete allows for unlimited options in design and customization. Because they are hand-crafted, not two will ever be identical. Although they tend to be on the expensive side, cost is not in the material itself, but rather in the creativity of the artisan and time spent on design, detail work, transportation, and installation. Depending on the contractor, chosen options, and regional location, price can be anywhere from $40 sq ft to $150 sq ft, or even higher. The price is normally on par with other materials such as granite and natural stone.

A concrete countertop can be made using the pre-cast method or cast in place with special concrete mixes for added flexibility and less shrinkage. A proper mix combined with reinforcement such as wire mesh, rebar, and fibers will significantly reduce or virtually eliminate the threat of cracking. Being able to control the environment makes the pre-cast method ideal, but many times it's not practical. Typical thickness is 1 1/2 to 2 inches. The weight can make transporting and placing slabs extremely difficult and labor intense. Therefore, cast-in-place is the only method for larger concrete countertops meant to be seamless and monolithic.

Countertops made with concrete can be integrally colored, stained, stamped, exposed, or ground down and polished. Using combinations and variations of these techniques along with design and creativity, a concrete artist can produce a countertop to fit any atmosphere and be as unique as you. Other materials like colored glass can be incorporated to enhance appearance and objects such as cutting boards can be embbeded to increase functionality. This kind of versatility is only possible with concrete.

Prized for thier uniqueness, designers and homeowners alike love the beauty and warm profile of a concrete countertop. Customers are continuously being thrilled with the chance to dictate the dimensions, shapes, colors, and textures of their countertops. Because each one is custom made, concrete countertops are one of the few items in a home that truly reflect personal taste.
