Concrete Overlay Stain

The big transformation from boring gray concrete to decorative concrete comes with the concrete overlay stain. This can also be the most difficult part. That is why we suggest making a sample board to test the stains beforehand.

For overlays we prefer to use water based acrylic stains. They are much easier to control and there's many more colors available to choose from. You can get a mottled effect similar to acid staining. Acrylic stains also make it easier to incorporate different color combinations.

Once you decide the colors, use the sample board to test different dilution ratios. Water based stains can be diluted with water to make the coloring less intense. Just remember that when staining, if the color is too light you can always go darker. But if it's too dark, you're stuck with it.

Be sure to mix plenty of stain to complete the project before applying. If you run out and have to mix more, you risk having different shades of color and you may also loose the wet edge. It's important to maintain a wet edge to avoid visible overlaps.

The preferred method of application is spraying with a pump sprayer. You don't have to worry about roller or brush marks left behind. You want to completely soak the surface while trying to limit puddling. With a textured overlay there will be puddling in the lowered areas. The stain will collect in these lower spots causing them to be darker or more intensely colored which creates a natural appearance.

For smaller areas or coloring individual squares, use a foam brush to apply the stain. Apply it heavy enough to puddle in the low spots.
