Instructions for Concrete Sealer Application

Important: Concrete sealers must be mixed well before application. The solids will settle to the bottom as it sits on the shelf.

Application on New/Fresh Concrete

If you're going to use sealer to cure concrete (preferred curing method), then the objective is to apply it as soon and as evenly as possible. A curing agent should be applied immediately following the finishing. The warmer/hotter it is outside, the more crucial this becomes.

Since you can't walk on fresh concrete, you have to walk along the perimeter and spray the sealer. Use a pump sprayer and set the tip for a fine mist. There are sprayers designed for use with solvents, but most of you don't have one. A cheap plastic garden sprayer will work. but you'll probably have to throw it away when you're done.

Keep the tip a few feet away from the concrete so you don't scar it. Cover the surface completely and avoid leaving puddles.

Application on Existing Concrete

The first step in concrete sealer application is cleaning the concrete. Once the concrete is clean, make sure it dries completely. Sealer won't bond to the surface very well if there's any moisture and will leave unsightly blotches.

For applying sealer, you can use a pump sprayer or a medium nap roller with an extension handle. Rolling is usually the preferred method because you're more likely to get an even coat and you don't have to worry about wind and overspray. Use a regular paint brush to seal around the edges first. Then completely saturate the roller with sealer and begin applying a thin, even coat and avoid puddling. Allow the first coat to dry completely which may take a few hours or several hours depending on temperature, wind, and humidity.

A second coat of sealer is recommended if the concrete has no sealer from a previous application. When applying sealer, remember that a few thin coats is always better than one heavy coat. Wait at least 24 hours before allowing foot or vehicle traffic.

Tips

Concrete sealer must be mixed well. This is best achieved with an electric mixer.

Always take proper precautions. Wear safety goggles and rubber gloves. Make sure there is good ventilation and wear a respirator when workin indoors.

Apply sealer when temperature is between 50 and 90 degrees a be sure there's no rain in the forecast for the next 24 hours.

If the concrete has a smooth finish, you can broadcast fine silica sand on top of the first coat of wet sealer for a non-slip surface.
