Concrete stains are not like like paints. Paint adheres to the surface and eventually peels and flakes. Stains penetrate the surface pores to create permanent color. Acid stains penetrate and chemically react with the cementitious material. Because of this, staining will last as long as the the actual surface of the concrete does. As the surface is worn away by traffic and weather, you'll see the stain fade away.
Keeping the surface coated with concrete sealer will provide protection against the fading of stains. Instead of the surface being worn down, it will just be the topcoat of sealer taking the abuse and protecting your investment.
A coat of concrete sealer should be applied periodically as a barrier. Driveways or any surfaces with vehicle traffic should be sealed once a year. For other surfaces that only see foot traffic, once every two to three years is enough to protect your concrete stains.
