epoxy floor paint for basement

Q. Hopefully, we have just finished preparing the surface of our basement floor for painting. What is the best epoxy product for painting the basement? I was thinking about getting the tan satin rustoleum kit with the chips. Is it better to apply two coats? Is there a better product out there?

A. There are several grades of epoxy available, and just like anything else, you get what you pay for. However, for low traffic residential floors, rustoleum will work just fine. It's also much easier to apply than the expensive stuff. The key to getting it to last is surface preparation.
As far as applying two coats, it is better than one coat, but you need to apply the second coat within 24 hours of the first. If you don't, then you'll have to scuff the first coat. I prefer a color coat and a clear coat intstead of two color coats for a higher shine, but either way works.
