Epoxy paint over vinyl tile

by Sue
(Michigan)

Q. Can you use epoxy paint over vinyl floor tile? If so what's the best kind or brand?

A. It's a bad idea to apply epoxy paint or any paint over vinyl tile. Not only will you have problems with adhering to vinyl, but vinyl is a flexible material. When you walk on it or put pressure on it it gives or flexes a little. Epoxy floor paint will not flex with floor and will crack and flake away. It's highly recommended that you remove the vinyl and the glue and etch the floor before applying any paint. This probably isn't the answer you were looking for but painting epoxy over vinyl would be a waste of money because you'll be taking it all up soon enough.
