Epoxy water base on top of Acrylic solvent base

by Rafael Bayona
(Repentigny, QC, Canada)

Q. I have bought a Techniseal acrylic solvent based sealer for my garage. First the consistency of the sealer was very low viscosity. I expected to have a thin layer, but the result was like a dying the concrete. Then I applied a second coat with improving results but I still do not see the shiny look I was expecting. I called Techniseal and they offered an epoxy water base sealer. My question is: Should I apply the epoxy on top of the acrylic? Techniseal said there is no problem but since the acrylic is solvent base I think that and epoxy water base is going to be very difficult to apply. Am I correct in my appreciation? I've also been thinking if I should apply a third coat of the acrylic then if I will not get the glossy finish I wanted.... Please let me know your comments.

I live in Canada then the weather is a factor to consider. What should be the best for this type of weather? Epoxy or Acrylic??

A You should be ok to apply the epoxy over the acrylic, especially if it's from the same company and they say the two are compatible. You should scuff the surface first by lightly sanding to ensure a good bond. Epoxy is usually higher gloss than acrylics so you will probably get the look you want. As far as the weather goes, it's not the cold temperatures that effects sealer, but moisture that comes up from the subgrade. If this is not a problem in your garage, then either sealer will work fine. If there is a moisture issue, then you shouldn't apply the epoxy because it is not as breathable as acrylic and will eventually start flaking off. If you know there is a vapor barrier under the concrete (plastic sheeting) then the epoxy will be fine.
