Exposed aggregate concrete sealer is the same type of sealer used for any exterior concrete. It must be a breathable acrylic sealer. Keeping this type of finish sealed is especially important. When the cement is washed off the surface to expose the aggregates, the result is a very porous surface. You need a coating to seal out contaminants and moisture. This is crucial in harsh climates that have many freeze and thaw cycles.
The most common typed of exposed aggregate finish is the exposed pea gravel. A regular clear sealer can be used for this. But there are tranlucent brown pigmented sealers specially made for enhancing the appearance. They are usually referred to as "honey brown sealer".

What a difference the sealer makes. The rich, golden brown finish is much more appealing. Just roll it on as you would a regular, clear sealer. The initial application may require two coats since the surface is very porous. But like all exterior concrete, the sealer will wear off over time and requires periodic reapplication.
You can find exposed aggregate concrete sealer at most concrete/masonry supply stores.
