Faux Finish Stain Sponging/Ragging

The sponging and ragging techniques of faux finish stain are an easy way for the do-it-yourselfer to create a beautiful masterpiece. They can be done with acid and acrylic stains or both.

Step 1 Follow instructions for acid stain surface preparation if using any acid stains or follow acrylic stain surface preparation if using only acrylic stains.

Step 2 Apply base coat with a brush, roller, or pump sprayer depending on how large the surface. If using an acid stain, make it your base coat and apply with brush or sprayer.

Step 3 Allow base coat to dry until it can be walked on.

Step 4 Apply second color with sponge or rag in any pattern or randomly. Allow it to dry and repeat for third color if desired.

Step 5 After all stains have dried, apply few coats of concrete sealer to protect and enhance your new surface.

Important: If you use any acid stains, you must neutralize the surface before applying sealer. To neutralize, mix ¼ lb of baking soda per 2 gallons of water, spray on surface, agitate with a brush, and rinse thoroughly.

The key to success is to do a test run on a piece of cardboard to practice the technique and make sure you like it.
