Faux Painting over Siliconized Acrylic Concrete Stain

by Cathy
(Florida)

Q. We have an indoor textured concrete patio floor that has a light color siliconized acrylic concrete stain on it (about 4 years old). We would like to put a faux finish on it. What is the best method for preparing the floor? Can we put any glaze in the concrete stain for the faux painting? Is there any type of metallic looking concrete stain that can be used as part of the faux finish?

A. For indoor concrete, you can use just about any acrylic stain or paint. The key is to put a clear coat on top and maintain it to serve as the sacrificial coat. Acid etching is normally to best prep method for acrylic stains but may not work if there is a sealer on the concrete already. Test it in an inconspicuous first. If the there's no fizzing, then you either have grind the surface or paint over what's already there. As for metallic color stain, I don't know of any but you could always faux finish with a paint indoors. Just keep it sealed and waxed.
