How to color concrete?

How to color concrete? There are several ways to color concrete. The easiest method is integral coloring. Just adding a dye to concrete during mixing adds color throughout the slab. Although it results in a somewhat dull appearance, it makes any chips or scratches unnoticeable because the color is consistent all the way through the concrete.

Another method is to throw a powder dye or "shake" onto the surface of freshly poured, wet concrete and then work it in with a bull float or trowell. This is typically done prior to stamping concrete.

The methods mentioned above are done during the installation of concrete. But with existing concrete, there are ways to color it and create almost any appearance you want.

Acid stains will color just about any concrete surface and can be applied any time after concrete cures.

Acrylic stains will add color to any existing concrete surface although the process is a little different from acid staining.

Colored concrete sealers are like paint. Just pick a color and roll it on. Since colored sealers don't penetrate the surface like stains do, they won't last as long but reapplication is simple.
