Pool Deck Maintenance

A bit of pool deck maintenance can keep your concrete looking nice and add many years to its life. It doesn't require that much effort, nothing like maintaining a wood deck. Keeping a coat of sealer on it is the main objective. Sealer keeps anything from penetrating the surface. Not only does it prevent stains, but it keeps the weather and all its elements from wearing down the surface. It protects the concrete from pool chemicals and foot traffic. It also makes cleaning the deck off a whole lot easier.

Exterior concrete should be sealed periodically, about once every three or four years or maybe more often depending on the climate and usage. If concrete is resealed before the previous coat is worn off, it makes the task much easier. It needs to bethoroughly cleaned before applying the sealer and the longer you wait between applications the harder it is to get clean.

Once you have it clean and it's dry, just roll the sealer on with a medium nap roller not leaving any puddles. The best type of sealer for exterior concrete is an acrylic sealer, whether it be water based or solvent based. Acrylic sealers allow the concrete to breathe. Water vapor is able to pass through these sealers which becomes very important in harsher climates. If you need to add slip resistance then you can use additives such as "shark grip".

Pool deck maintenance isn't much but it's well worth the time and effort to keep the concrete looking sharp.
