Preparing an interior floor for acrylic stain

by Jess
(San Marcos, Texas)

Q. I am considering using an acrylic stain on the concrete in our family room, which is a remodeled garage area. My problem is the preparation, the cleaning, degreasing and etching step. Everything I am reading says to use a power sprayer or hose to clean the cement, which makes sense outside, but not inside a house. I am concerned with water/chemical leakage to the walls and a built in wooden shelving unit. Is there a way to clean the cement while not damaging the surrounding structure? Can a wet/dry vac be used or will the etching chemicals damage it? I am prepared to use plastic tarps and tape, but I am afraid they will not help much. Please advise.

A. You can use a wet/dry vac. This is about the only way to do it inside. The acid won't hurt it because all the parts are plastic. You need to spot clean first with specific cleaners for specific stains. A wire brush and some elbow grease may be necessary for some of the spots.
When spot cleaning is finished, then do the acid etching. Let it sit for 15 minutes or so, then suck it up with the wet vac. Neutralize it with baking soda or ammonia and rinse a few times. Once it's dry, you're ready for the stain.
