Q. I am planning on re-modeling my basement and found the information you've provided here very helpful, but I can't determine what product to use for the concrete overlay (one that would allow the stencil method you've shown) and where I would get this product. Also, I've read that sometimes you need to use a moisture seal prior to applying the first coat. Is this necessary for the method you've described?
A. You need what's called a "polymer topping". They are sold at most concrete/masonry supply stores, and I assume there are several in Pitt. Read all instructions because they don't all work the same, but you can get the same results. As for the moisture seal, this is only necessary if there is alot of hydrostatic pressure, meaning excessive moisture is coming up through the floor. Tape down a 1 ft x 1 ft square of plastic sheeting tightly on all four sides and let it sit for at least 12 hours. If drops of moisture develop, then you sould apply vapor barrier sealer. If just a little bit of moisture is there, then you don't really need it because polymer overlays will allow the floor to breathe. But with any moisture, you can only use an acrylic sealer on top of the overlay. Do not use epoxies or urethanes because they will fail under hydrostatic pressure.
