Scoring Lines Against the Wall

by Michelle
(Silver City, NM)

Q. I have a slab I would like to score, but how do you get all the way to the walls with the cut?

A. Unfortunately you use a round blade to score lines so it's impossible to get against the wall without cutting into the wall itself. You can finish the line with a hand tool such as a chisel, but it may not look so good. The best way to avoid having to score all the way up to the wall is to put a border around the perimeter. Score a line parallel to the wall a few inches away or so to create a border all the way around the room and stain it a darker or different color. This way all your lines running to the wall can stop at your border. A border really makes a floor look nice.
