There are two types of stains to choose from, acid stains and acrylic stains. Acid stains are more natural looking while acrylic stains are easier to use. You might also consider some scoring techniques to further enhance a patio.
There are so many different options for decorating a patio with stains and you are only limited by your imagination. With quality products, good planning, and proper preparation, anyone can do it. For the inexperienced, my best advice is to "keep it simple"!
The most important step in staining a concrete patio is preparing the surface. Exterior concrete needs a deep cleaning to get the built up dirt and grime out of the pores and anything that blocks penetration of the stain. Cleaner concrete means better results.
Also, ascertain there are no previous coatings or lingering curing agents left over from installation of the patio. If the concrete darkens instantly when you pour water on it, then you're good. Any water beading means something is blocking penetration and a stripping agent may be needed.
The final step of any concrete staining venture is applying a clear sealer. Because were talking about exterior concrete, the only choice is a breathable acrylic sealer, either solvent or water based.
If you’re tired of dull gray look and don’t want to pay the high price for decorative work, staining a concrete patio is a cheap and easy way spruce up your outdoor living space.
