Staining concrete pavers

by Joe Dagostino
(florida)

Q. Can pavers be stained? if so, should i use acid or acrylic stains?
How will the original color of my pavers (my patio is a combination of tan square pavers outlined with red square pavers)affect the stain?

A. I'm assuming you have concrete pavers, so the answer is yes, they can be stained. You can use either acid or acrylic, it just depends on the colors you want. Acid stains will create more natural colors. Obviously concrete that already has pigment will stain differently than gray concrete. I know that staining will make them darker. All you can do is test the stain on a few of the pavers. Keep in mind that you can also sealcoat the pavers, which will change the color more. I do recommend sealing, especially if you use acrylic stains.
