Stamped concrete release agent in pool

by Terry
(Tennessee)

Q. I just had a stamped concrete patio installed near by above ground pool which has one end buried in the ground (on sloping hill). I took great pains to cover the pool with the winter cover and an additional 4 ml plastic cover. During the washing process (pressure washer) some of the gray dust from the activator got under the cover and in the pool. When I looked in the skimmer, I could see the gray powder being drawn into it and into the filter. Is this substance dangerous? I put some in a glass of water and it only floats. Will running the pump pull out all of the chemical or am I going to have to drain the pool and fill it again? I sure hope not...

A. Release agent for concrete stamping is a nasty substance that can be a nuisance. I wouldn't say it's dangerous unless you're exposed to it frequently. It's like cigarette smoke. A little bit is not going to kill you. I've been covered head to toe with that stuff and still woke up the next morning with no problems. As for the pool, just let the filter do it's job. It will slowly but surely disappear.
