Timeline for concrete sidewalks

by ruth
(lapeer,MI)

Q. We live in Michigan , 30 miles east of Flint. How late in the season can we pour a concrete sidewalk?

A. You can pour in temperatures as low as 20 degrees. There are freeze resistant additives for concrete and we use them all winter long with no problem. If there is any question on whether these additives are needed, call a local ready mix company and ask. The subgrade cannot be frozen at the time of installation. If the temperature is below freezing then you need to cover the subgrade with insulation blankets or straw until pouring begins. The concrete needs to sealed immediately after finishing.
