Concerns with the environment have brought about the use of water based concrete stain. Water based stains have very low odor and low VOC (volatile organic compounds) which has become a requirement in some states like Arizona and California and it’s probably safe to say other states will follow.
Water based concrete stain is composed of acrylic resins in a water based solution. They make up the biggest group of acrylic stains and are the most widely used. Water based stains are thin and the formulation of these stains allow for deep penetration into the concrete surface with strong adhesion. This ability to penetrate the surface is what makes them a true concrete stain and not a topcoat like paint and colored sealers.
Being water based makes these stains easy to apply and clean up. There are also few safety concerns when compared with acid stains or solvent based stains. And this is what makes water based concrete stain ideal for the do-it-youselfer.
